Balcony Power Plants in Germany
Currently, there is no law or regulation in Germany governing the generation of solar power solely for personal use. The limit of a maximum of 600W AC PV power is a reserve value that, according to current VDE standards, can be fed into an existing household socket circuit without overloading it. No specific requirements are described for independent circuits without additional load. Every electrical installation should be performed in compliance with VDE standards. However, operating a balcony power plant via the usual Schuko socket is generally not prohibited. Notification to the Federal Network Agency is mandatory. However, no cases of fines for unregistered balcony power plants are known, nor are there insurmountable issues with network operators. Compliance with and implementation of standards and obligations are the responsibility of the system operator.
