Inverter Test | Hybrid | PV | Test Winner | Which Inverter is the Best

Inverter Test & Comparison 2024 - Top 7 Manufacturers & Practical Test Winner

Every PV system requires an inverter because without it, the generated power couldn't be utilized. But what should you consider when purchasing an inverter? We at Offgridtec explain the functionality as well as the key factors in the purchasing decision and compare our top 7 inverter manufacturers.

What is the purpose of an inverter?

Solar cells in photovoltaic modules generate direct current (DC) from sunlight. However, households require alternating current (AC). Therefore, the generated DC needs to be converted. This is where the inverter comes into play. It converts DC into AC, which can then be directly used by electrical devices in our homes. Ensuring that the electricity has the correct frequency is also important for grid connection. Thus, the inverter is an essential component in every solar installation.

Finding the right inverter - What to consider

When purchasing an inverter, there are several criteria to consider in order to find the suitable device. Firstly, it's important to choose the right type of inverter. Different types of inverters are used for different sizes of PV systems. Let's briefly introduce the various types:

Firstly, there are the module inverters, also known as microinverters, which convert the power of a single module into AC. They are smaller and can optimize each individual module using a maximum power point (MPP) tracker. While this sounds advantageous, microinverters are generally less powerful and less efficient. As a result, they are mainly used in small balcony solar systems and "complicated" PV systems where the solar panels are oriented differently.

The next type is called string inverters, which convert the power of a string. A string refers to a group of solar panels with similar performance that are connected in series. A rooftop system usually consists of several strings. The advantage of this concept is related to the maximum power point (MPP). In a series connection, the weakest link determines the MPP. By grouping all modules centrally, losses often occur because individual modules are shaded. This problem can be solved by dividing them into strings.

Good to know: Instead of using multiple string inverters, multistring inverters are often used. In special cases, it can be even more efficient to use a power optimizer for each module. However, they are slightly more expensive.

As briefly mentioned above, multistring inverters are a variant of string inverters. They are capable of processing the power of multiple strings in one device. Corresponding to the number of strings, they have multiple maximum power point (MPP) trackers. This technology is advantageous when space is limited or the solar panels are oriented differently.

Central inverters are another type of PV inverters and function as a single inverter for the entire system. Consequently, there is only one MPP tracker for all modules. However, this is unfavorable for households, unlike large solar power plants in open spaces. Conditions in such environments are usually homogeneous, as there are no shading from trees or similar obstructions. The central inverter then offers two advantages:

  • It is more cost-effective than many string inverters.
  • It experiences fewer power losses since only one inverter needs to be operated.

If you want to operate an energy storage system, you theoretically need two inverters. One is used to convert the electricity between the solar panels and the electrical consumers. The other is a specialized battery inverter for the battery. The battery is charged with direct current and provides it when discharging.

A solution for this are hybrid inverters. Depending on the requirements, they convert the electricity from the photovoltaic system and the battery. Some batteries are partially integrated directly into the housing, but hybrid inverters can also be operated with an external energy storage solution. The advantage is that solar power and battery storage can be effortlessly utilized.

For special off-grid systems – meaning not for feeding electricity into the grid – island inverters have also been designed. They are used, for example, in campervans with solar panels, but are also suitable for small off-grid power plants, such as those on balconies or in gardens.

Furthermore, the question arises as to whether you need a single-phase or three-phase inverter. Both variants have their respective advantages and applications. Single-phase inverters are more commonly used in smaller photovoltaic systems. They are very compact and lightweight, making them easy to install. They are characterized by high reliability and longevity.

If you have a smaller system with a capacity of up to 6 kWp, a single-phase inverter could be the right choice for you. With this inverter, you can efficiently generate the alternating current needed in your household. Another advantage of single-phase inverters is that they are more cost-effective than their counterparts.

Indeed, we are now on the topic of three-phase inverters. These are suitable for use in larger PV systems or when your power consumption fluctuates significantly. They are capable of delivering higher power outputs and offer improved power regulation. While they are somewhat more expensive and their installation is a bit more complex, three-phase inverters are significantly more efficient than single-phase ones, especially for larger systems. In the long run, this investment can certainly pay off.

Once you've determined which class of inverter is suitable for you and whether you need a single-phase or three-phase inverter, you can focus on the following criteria:

Efficiency: The inverter converts DC to AC, but there's always some loss of power, mainly in the form of heat. The goal should be to minimize this loss. Pay attention to the efficiency rating, which indicates how much AC can be produced from DC. Modern models can achieve an inverter efficiency of up to 98%. Consider the efficiency when making a purchase to gain several kilowatt-hours over the lifespan of the solar system.

Lifespan: Inverters are heavily used components of solar systems and have a limited lifespan. You can expect a functional lifespan of 10 to 15 years depending on the model. After this period, replacement is recommended.

Warranty: There's a distinction between voluntary manufacturer warranty and legally required warranty. Typically, the warranty period for inverters ranges from two to five years, covering both installation and the inverter itself. Occasionally, there's an option for extended warranty coverage.

Certifications: Inverters must undergo various performance tests and meet regulatory standards. These include tests for electrical safety (IEC/EN/UL 62109-1/-2) and electromagnetic compatibility, as well as efficiency, environmental requirements, reliability, and more. When purchasing, ensure that the inverter is certified for use in your country.

IP Rating (Ingress Protection): The IP rating indicates the environmental conditions under which an electrical device can be used. It consists of two digits, such as IP55. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against solid objects (e.g., dust), while the second digit indicates protection against moisture. Higher numbers indicate better protection. Inverters often have an IP65 rating, providing complete protection against dust ingress and protection against low-pressure water jets.
