Battery switches for car, boat and motorhome - the diverse areas of application
Battery switches are used to interrupt the flow of current from batteries when they are not in use. They are mainly used in commercial vehicles such as cars, motorbikes and motor homes, but also in boats.
A battery switch is particularly important for systems with several batteries, such as the starter and on-board battery of a boat.
At Offgridtec you have the choice of various manual and electrical switches. The manual ones, as the name suggests, are operated manually by means of a rotary, push or pull switch lever. Our electric switches, on the other hand, can be conveniently operated by remote control and are characterised by extremely low self-consumption.
Installation of battery disconnectors
Connect your battery switch with a short cable directly after the battery. In the case of motorhomes, for example, it does not matter whether the circuit breaker is connected to the positive or negative terminal. In general, however, we always recommend choosing the negative pole for motor vehicles.
A battery switch can vary in its construction. Therefore, we always advise our customers to read the operating instructions carefully before installation in order to avoid mistakes and resulting damage. If you have any questions, our experts will be happy to help you at any time by telephone.

FAQ
- Where is the battery circuit breaker installed? To operate your self-sufficient systems correctly and, above all, safely, a battery switch is indispensable. At Offgridtec, you can choose from various models and designs in 12V, 24V and even 48V for a wide range of applications, such as for motorhomes, boats, cars or motorbikes. - What does a battery disconnect switch do? A battery disconnect switch interrupts the connection between two batteries or a battery and the connected accessories when it is not in use. This prevents unwanted discharges and allows maintenance and assembly work to be carried out safely.
- Which pole must be disconnected first? When disconnecting batteries, always disconnect the negative cable (usually blue or black) first and then the positive cable (red).
- Why must disconnectors not be switched under load? A disconnecting operation under load would destroy the battery switch because an electrical gas discharge would take place between the two electrodes (arc fault).
